5 Tips To Beat Sugar Cravings This Easter
Easter is such a wonderful time of year, it is one of my favourite holidays! For me it is always filled with lots of family time and a chocolate or two hehe. Easter is the holiday of the year that is basically dedicated to chocolatey treats. Along with the chocolate treats can also come more sugar cravings, energy crashes, gut disturbance or skin breakouts. If you are wanting to prevent these try out these tips:
Ensure you are having balanced protein intake throughout the day. Each individual will require a different daily protein intake but a general recommendation is aiming for approximately 1g of protein per kg of body weight per day. Aim to get regular balanced protein intake at each meal and space out your daily protein intake through your breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.
Don’t skimp on fibre and complex carbohydrates at every meal - these provide our good bacteria with a fuel source and help to maintain the pH of the colon. Including a variety of these foods within the diet will help prevent overgrowth of pathogens and gut disturbance.
Drink enough water - often when we are dehydrated we will feel hunger first and thirst second. Ensuring that you are drinking adequate fluids throughout the day will help to prevent reaching for unwanted chocolates.
When indulging in those chocolate Easter treats keep the remainder of your diet balanced and low GI to prevent more unnecessary blood sugar imbalances.
Talk to your practitioner about a magnesium and chromium supplement, if you do struggle to control your sweet cravings, energy fluctuations and blood sugar imbalances these nutrients may assist you.
Another important thing to address is your thoughts around Easter and eating chocolate… if you are worried about binge eating, over indulging or have a negative relationship with food I would recommend address these underlying thoughts. It is often an unhelpful relationship with foods that can be the most damaging rather then just the foods themselves.
