Protein Packed Toast Toppings
Quality and quantity matter when it comes to protein sources, your requirement will depend on a number of factors as a general rule it is ideal to have approximately 1g of protein per kg of body weight per day. Protein not only nourishes muscles but also is required to balance mood and hormones!
A protein packed breakfast can make a huge difference in preventing energy fluctuations and sweet cravings throughout the day. Protein is a macronutrient that keeps blood sugar levels stable and improves meal satiety.
A lot of my clients previously started their day with a bowl of quick oats, vegemite on toast or a fruit smoothie. After making some small tweaks to their breakfast intake they find that they feel more energised throughout the day, have less energy crashes and aren’t craving as many sweet foods.
Here are some of favourite protein packed toast toppings (some of these are simple enough to incorporate when your on the run and don’t have as much time to make breakfast).
ABC Spread + Hemp Seeds + Banana
Method:
Toast 1-2 slices of bread of choice (preferably wholegrain, avoid white/refined breads)
Top each slice with 1 tablespoon ABC (almond, brazil nut, cashew) spread
Top each slice with 1 tablespoon hemp seeds
Top each slice with 1/4-1/2 banana
Add a pinch of cinnamon for extra flavour
Goat Cheese + Fig + Hemp Seeds
Method:
Toast 1-2 slices of bread of choice (preferably wholegrain, avoid white/refined breads)
Top each slice with 1 tablespoon goat cheese
Top each slice with 1 tablespoon hemp seeds
Top each slice with 1 sliced fresh fig
Hummus + Seeds + Tomato
Method:
Toast 1-2 slices of bread of choice (preferably wholegrain, avoid white/refined breads)
Top each slice with 1-2 tablespoon hummus
Top each slice with 1 tablespoon hemp seeds and 1 tablespoon sunflower seeds
Top each slice with 1/2 sliced tomato and a handful of alfalfa sprouts
Smoked Salmon + Avocado + Rocket
Method:
Toast 1-2 slices of bread of choice (preferably wholegrain, avoid white/refined breads)
Top each slice with 1/4 smashed avocado and handful of rocket
Top each slice with approx 50g smoked salmon
Smoked Salmon + Goat Cheese + Rocket
Method:
Toast 1-2 slices of bread of choice (preferably wholegrain, avoid white/refined breads)
Top each slice with half cube goats cheese (approx 1 tablespoon) and handful of rocket
Top each slice with approx 50g smoked salmon
Sardines + Spinach + Dill
Method:
Toast 1-2 slices of bread of choice (preferably wholegrain, avoid white/refined breads)
Top each slice with 5-10 spinach leaves and half can sardines
Top with sprinkle of dill for flavour
